Top E Cigarette Brands: Are They a Good Alternative for Smokers?

An electronic cigarette, E-cig, vape, call it what you want, it is one of the most popular alternatives to smoking. It is a battery-operated device that turns nicotine-laced and non-nicotine solutions liquid into vapor, mimicking real smoke from a traditional cigarette. It is like inhaling tobacco with less nicotine and without smoke. These devices are marketed as a way to lessen cigarette consumption or quit smoking. Vape or electronic cigarettes has been used by millions of smokers all over the world since its invention in China in 2004. In 2016, at least 3.2% of smokers in the United States uses the device.

Today, it is one of the most popular ways to quit smoking. Unfortunately, the best electronic cigarette in the market today is not only used by people who want to quit smoking. It is also now popular among teenagers in the United States. According to surveys, people who use vape rises 900% among teenagers from 2010 to 2016. Two years ago, at least two million students from middle school and high school used e-cigarettes. For people aged 18 to 25, at least 40% of e-cig users have not used traditional cigarettes or have been a smoker before using a vaping device.

Research says vaping can be hazardous

Although it helps smokers quit or reduce their cigarette consumption, there have been concerns from different groups like anti-smoking advocates and the United States Food and Drug Administration about the hazardous effects of vaping in our health. It has been a concern that large numbers of young people start using e-cigarette for their own sake, not to replace cigarette use. In 2016, the FDA began to regulate the manufacturing, sales and marketing of vaping products.

E-Cigarette facts

Vape or e-cigarettes aims to recreate the effect of a traditional cigarette without burning tobacco. They are sold in the market to reduce the consumption of tobacco and quit smoking. According to smokers, the device helps them stop faster compared to nicotine patches or gums. But some studies show the adverse effects of vaping on people’s health. Because of this, the government is starting to regulate the sale, production and marketing of vape devices. They also discourage young people and non-smokers from using e-cigarettes.

What is e-cigarette?

An e-cigarette is a long tube device that usually resembles a traditional cigarette, tobacco or even a pen. Most vapes are reusable and with replaceable components as well as refillable cartridges, but there are vape pens that are disposable or good only for single use. The first non-tobacco, smokeless device was conceptualized and patented by Herbert A. Gilbert in 1963, but it was just materialized in 2003 by a Chinese pharmacist who is working for a company called Golden Dragon Holdings, currently known as Ruyan. The company started dealing outside China and into the global market from 2005 to 2006. Right now, there are more than 500 different brands of vape on the market.

How does it work?

Most, if not all e-cigarette or vape are composed of: a mouthpiece, heating element or coil, a rechargeable battery (usually a 18650 Lithium-Ion battery), and an electronic circuit for automated mods or devices. As the user heats the coil, it vaporizes the flavored e-juice held in the cotton wrapped around the coil. The user then inhales the vaporized solution just like smoking a real cigarette. E-juices have different nicotine content depending on the user’s preference. It varies from zero milligrams to 24 to 40 milligrams per milliliter for heavy smokers. The atomizer or commonly known as RDA in the vaping community is the heating element of the device. It is where the coil is put, and helps vaporizes the e-liquid. The battery powers the device. Usually, it is a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, but there are other batteries used aside from lithium-ion. The e-liquid or the vape juice is made from vegetable glycerin mixed with propylene glycol, flavoring and nicotine extracted from tobacco. You can choose different flavors, from pastry, fruity, mentholated to tobacco flavored e-juice. There are vape juices that mixed tobacco and menthol to resemble a traditional cigarette, to make it easier for smokers to make the transition from conventional cigarettes to vape.

The benefits of using an e-cigarette

Vape or e-cigars claims to have fewer health risks compared to tobacco smoking. They are also claiming that it is a better alternative for smoking compared to nicotine patches, capsules or gums. There are also studies that show e-cig can help smokers lessen their cigarette intake and eventually quit smoking. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, most smokers who want to cut down their nicotine intake can benefit from an e-cigarette. But CDC warns that vaping is not suitable for young people, people who don’t smoke before, pregnant women and children.
